Since 1993, I have worked on many patents, with 19 issued and 41 more
filed with the USPTO (some of them also foreign-filed/issued). Until 2000, I

Technical work
| 2005-2008: Chief SoC Architect of the Montalvo microprocessor.
This is an complex multi-core x86 design. I am
responsible for the architecture (and microarchitecture) of most of the chip outside the cores and
caches. This includes the memory controller, the I/O interfaces, the power
management subsystem,
power and clocking domains/schemes and the various analog and miscellaneous
functions (interrupt controllers, PLLs, efuses, temperature sensors, JTAG...).
I am also responsible for many global functions like address mapping,
reset/power management, register accesses... and helped on many cache- and
core-related issues. |

- I was the presenter at the Fall Processor Forum 2004.
This is a family of dual- and quad-core GHz-class MIPS64 System-on-a-Chip
devices, derived from the BCM1400 effort (see below), which provides very
high integration and performance levels with a variety of I/O interfaces (DDR/DDR2,
HyperTransport, PCI-X, SPI-4, Gigabit Ethernet, Generic Bus, UART, SMbus...)
and internal engines (2x32-channel packet DMA engine, ccNUMA controller,
Data Mover, Ethernet DMA, Interrupt/Debug/Performance controller...). In the
pre-tapeout phase, I was responsible for all the specifications (User Manual,
Datasheet), part of the architecture and micro-architecture and was involved
in a number of collateral activities (customer discussions, IP blocks,
packaging...). In the post-tapeout phase, I worked on customer support,
silicon debug, bug tracking, revision and new feature planning... The chips
starting sampling in 4Q04. |
| 2000-2003: Architecture and design on the BCM1400 project (ED1,
ED2, MPR,
LG),
a Broadcom/SiByte
high-performance embedded MIPS multi-processor System-on-a-Chip.
Defined the HyperTransport and PCI subsystems, the address maps and part of
the high-speed packet processing path. Architected or helped architect
several of the related blocks. Defined and implemented the internal switch.
The BCM1400 is a System-on-a-chip targeted primarily at networking
applications. It is composed of four custom 64-bit 1 GHz MIPS cores (with an
L2 cache and a memory controller), various SoC interfaces and a High-Speed
Subsystem composed of three 10-20 Gb/s multi-mode ports supporting
HyperTransport and SPI-4, an internal switch, a channelized Packet DMA
engine and an I/O bridge (providing CC-NUMA support). |
| 1998-2000: Distributed 3D rendering using off-the-shelf
graphics cards and a custom interconnect.
Architected and implemented Sepia (1 and 2), a scalable 3D
compositing infrastructure based on Compaq's ServerNet networking product.
Architected and helped design Sepia 2, a custom PCI 66/64 FPGA+networking
board (photo). Developed all the low-level software runtime,
FPGA code, verification and test software and OpenGL-based demonstrations. Sepia provides a high-bandwidth (180 MB/s full duplex,
plus compression), scalable (to 100s of nodes), low-latency, reliable,
programmable (the compositing function is user-programmable in one of the
FPGAs) infrastructure for 3D compositing.
Also implemented a prototype of
Sepia on PCI
Pamette (a generic FPGA board developed at Digital/Compaq).
This project won a DoE grant and the next version is in development (HP). |
| 1995-2000:
Developed many of the PCI
Pamette (photo) applications and utilities. Also ported and maintained all the
PCI Pamette environment from Digital Unix to Windows NT, including
the device driver. |
| 1998-1999: Implemented an IDE disk interface on a custom
board (photo). The interface looks like an IDE disk on one side, and is interfaced
through a PCI bus to an embedded processor. The
hardware part is implemented on an FPGA. Wrote both the hardware and
software code to support the ATA specification. Also implemented a prototype
of the IDE interface on PCI Pamette. |
| 1996-2000: Used a simple PCI bus spy application on PCI
Pamette to acquire information on
the maximum PCI bandwidth attainable on a given system, and also to help
debugging or profiling existing PCI devices in system, without interference.
Measured PCI performance and real-time capabilities (interrupt dispatching
time) of many x86- and Alpha-based system running Windows NT and Digital
Unix. |
| 1996: Implemented part of the head-end add-on board of a cable
modem on PCI Pamette. |
| 1996: Developed a fast camera interface
for the Swedish Vacuum Solar Telescope, Canary Islands.
Improved the response time and the robustness of a 60 Hz, 20 MB/s CCD
camera interface implemented on a TURBOChannel Pamette. Added
Real-Time control for polarizing LCD devices. |
| 1994: Designed and implemented 2 High-Energy Physics
particle tracking algorithms for CERN on the DECPeRLe-1
reconfigurable board. Achieved best performance compared to a variety of
other architectures, e.g. 500x to 1000x the speed of the software implementations. |
| 1993:
Implemented an algorithm of stereovision (based on local correlation, developed
at INRIA) on the DECPeRLe-1 reconfigurable board. Achieved speedups of 35x
compared to a 4-DSP board and 200x compared to a Sparc 2 workstation,
which made it the first real-time implementation of this family of
algorithms. This was also probably the first application ever using run-time reconfiguration
of FPGAs. |

| Digital electronics: Taught digital electronics and provided
hands-on courses using the PCI Pamette (FPGA) board to allow students to implement
a variety of projects (processors, games, video and audio capture and
processing...), at Ecole
Polytechnique, the top French scientific school. |
